What's better than 30 years of dog training experience? It’s NOT 31! I’m covering why the duration someone spends training dogs does not create expertise, going against the commonly held belief that longevity in a profession guarantees proficiency. Now, 30 years of growing skills and being open to new ideas can create mastery, but living the same year 30 times does the opposite. Get all the critical tips to maximize the next year of your dog training experience and success.

In this episode you’ll hear:

• That experience does not equate to expertise in dog training.
• Why some experts or trainers get worse with time.
• About the reasons to embrace continual growth..
• Tips to maximize the next year of your dog training experience.
• Why it's important to be deliberate and purposeful in quest for growth.
• The importance of being able to read your dog’s T.E.M.P.
• How creating a training plan is like putting together a recipe.
• The value of listening to your dog’s feedback.
• How to be deliberate and purposeful in your training

I've got a riddle for you. What's better than 30 years of dog training experience?

0:06.0

And I'll give you a hint. It's not 31 years.

0:19.3

Hi, I'm Susan here. Welcome to Shape by Dog. And I want to talk about dog training experience

0:26.2

and the fact that so often we put our faith in so-called experts or trainers based on their

0:34.1

experience in the trade. And it just makes sense, right? Like, yeah, I've been a dog trainer

0:38.3

all my life. Therefore, the implication is I know a lot of things. I know more than a lot of other

0:44.0

people. And I want to challenge you. And I want you to challenge that thought yourself because

0:49.9

you could have 30 years experience doing the same thing that you did in year one. And in fact,

0:55.2

you really have one year of experience and 30 years of repeating that one year. There's a great

1:00.3

book called Peek by Anders Erickson. And he talks about there are some professions and he named

1:06.9

drivers, doctors and teachers that it's easy in those professions for people to actually

1:13.5

get worse as they get more experienced, that the level of expertise they have isn't as high

1:20.2

as somebody who would have less experience. Now, if you're listening to this podcast episode and

1:26.0

you are a doctor, a driver, or a teacher, of course, that's not you because you're listening to this podcast episode and you are a doctor, a driver, or a teacher,

1:28.9

of course, that's not you because you're a growth-minded person.

1:32.4

That's why you're listening to Shape by Dog.

1:34.4

But I bet if you're a doctor, a teacher, or a driver, you can think of colleagues that

1:41.2

are doing the same thing they did way back when they first started being a doctor

1:46.6

or a driver or a teacher because I know I sure can. I see dog trainers no matter what dog they have,

1:53.3

no matter how often they've failed. They will do the same thing and accept it's the dog's fault.

2:00.3

He's just stupid. He's just fill in the blank.

2:03.6

It's the breed. It's a terrier. It's a husky. It's never their approach. It's the breed.
