like Athena from the head of Zeus, the conviction

that human life is sacred and valuable

or that it should be protected

and that the state has no right to take it away

or to measure it on a scale of value.

That's not something that you just thought of

because you're such a decent person

and everybody decent like you feels that way.

That's something that comes down to us

from a specific wisdom tradition

outside of which it's a howling wasteland, man.
