I will never believe that a harm marker by faith is to look at somebody who loves differently than we do and say, for the sake of the gospel, I'm a walk away from you.

mixed company. This week, Eric and I got to chat with theologian, writer, and author

Candace Marie Benbow, about her new book, Red Lips Theology, for church girls who

considered tithing to the beauty supply store when Sunday morning isn't enough.

I wanted to bring Candace on to talk about one of the biggest, most foundational influences

on black culture and especially black women, the church.

In her book, Candace challenges every idea of religion that we've come to

know as gospel. She refers to God not as he, but they, them. She encourages the need for grace

by telling her own story of being the other woman. And she makes the case that the Bible is a more

overtly sexual text than we think.

What is red lip theology, and how did you develop it?

Red lip theology is the lens through which I see myself as a black millennial woman of faith.

I felt like as black millennial women, we don't have a lot of conversations around faith that are context and our experiences and the truth that
