Hi, I'm Cara Swisher, Editor-Large of Recode.

You may know me as someone who prays every day at the church of my Twitter timeline, but in my spare time I talk tech and you're listening to Recode Decode from the Vox Media Podcast Network.

Today in the red chair, I'm very excited to have Sam Harris, the host of the podcast, making sense.

He's also a neuroscientist and author of several books, including The End of Faith, The Moral Landscaped, and waking up a guide to spirituality without religion.

He's also quite controversial online for a lot of reasons, which we will talk about.

Harris has spent much of his career talking about the links he sees between religion and terrorism, most specifically focusing on Islam.

It is no more mysterious behavior than you and I go into Starbucks because one of us said, hey, would you like to get a cup of coffee and then they said yes, right?

It's completely rational behavior given the requisite beliefs.

He says he has enemies online who have unfairly painted him as a racist by taking his quotes out of context.

If I said on this podcast, black people are apes, white people are apes, we're all apes. Racism doesn't make any sense.

There are people with blue check marks on Twitter who would create a meme that says black people are apes, Sam Harris, and spread that to the end of the earth.

We also talk about why Harris rejects the idea of identity politics, what social media companies should do about the toxicity of some users, and why he doesn't feel as strongly about violence and white supremacy as he does about violent jihadism.
