Summary

There's no way around it: more stuff means more sedentarism. Products of convenience move on our behalf, and our kids are moving their bodies less than any other generation in human history. Our culture–and the items the market produces to support our ways of life—dissuade self-sufficiency, and so creating a movement-rich life for our health and for the planet's may often feel like an uphill battle. This week I speak with author and biomechanist Katy Bowman. Katy offers tangible ways to reclaim the movement opportunities that have been lost to the conveniences associated with modern living.   Here's a preview: [7:30] The relationship between carbon footprints, pleasure, and movement lost [16:00] How to become more tolerant of movement in the house [19:15] Ways to engage kids who don't consider themselves "outdoorsy" [22:45] Multitasking versus stacking: What's the difference (and why does it matter?) [25:20]  2 steps listeners can take right now to reclaim movement opportunities that have been lost to convenience     Resources mentioned: Grow Wild: The Whole-Child, Whole-Family, Nature-Rich Guide to Moving More Katy on Instagram Save The Earth book series Watch the extended version of this interview on Youtube This show is listener-supported. Thank you for supporting! Well, hello there and welcome. We made it friends. My name is Stephanie Safarian and it is time for my number one most favorite episode that is aired on the show in the last 500 episodes. Now let me just say, I had a really hard time picking number one. I couldn't decide did I want to go interesting or did I want to go philosophical?

0:24.4

Did I want to go with concrete ideas or more borderless, ethereal ideas? And I decided for this

0:31.7

episode to choose the interesting and concrete episode. But next week, I am going to air one more top favorite episode

0:39.4

because I just cannot finish this top five without adding in a top six. I hate boundaries.

0:45.9

I hate rules. So this is going to be a top six countdown. So today's show, the number one

0:52.4

most interesting episode I've released is an interview with

0:56.9

Biomechanist Katie Bowman.

0:59.9

This episode aired back in November of 2021.

1:04.4

So three whole years ago.

1:05.9

And it's all about the ways in which our preponderance towards convenience culture is impacting our body, is impacting our movement.

1:17.4

And what I love about this episode is number one.

1:20.5

It's obviously super interesting, something I personally had never thought of until talking with Katie.

1:27.1

But also, I love this episode because

1:29.6

it starts to touch on the lasting ways that we are not only impacting our own health and wellness,

1:38.0

but the health and wellness of generations down the line amidst our sedentary, always on screens, not moving so much culture.

1:47.8

By the way, before we get into the interview, just a quick note, a subscriber-only episode

1:53.2

came out yesterday. It was titled Offline Dopamine. If you are a subscriber on Apple Podcasts,

1:59.6

it went straight to your phone. If you are not a

2:03.3

subscriber but want to listen, you can try the free trial over on Apple and that'll get you

2:09.6

that episode. It's all about finding ways to experience real joy, real happiness in real life,

2:17.3

as opposed to on screens. Enjoy that as well. And enjoy my

2:22.4

tied for number one favorite episode with Katie Bowman.
