Summary

Afternoon recap:

The medical examiner finishes on the stand

The next witness brings in 2 jail calls with Tanner and his mom & Tanner and his grandma. He admits to killing Athena, asks about what they’re saying on TV, says he’s getting crazy letters in jail. The staff hates him mostly, inmates are looking at him, he cries about his son, whines about jail, and asking non-stop to call Cassie's dad and ask  to have her call him - he hasn't heard from her.

What should know, alibis? Welcome to another episode of Pretty Lies and Alibis. I'm Gigi. Good to have you here. It's Monday, April 13th.

Before we jump in, I am working on these calls that were played in the courtroom today. It's Tanner talking to

0:22.7

his mother and then another call he's talking to his grandmother. The audio was not great at all.

0:28.6

So I'm having to sort of isolate the vocals, enhance those, take out some background noises,

0:33.7

and then just shove my AirPods down in my ear as far as I can so I can make out certain

0:39.0

words. It may be tomorrow before those are out because it's getting late, kind of had a busy day,

0:45.5

and your girl's tired. But back on the stand after lunch was the medical examiner. She just

0:51.3

retestifies from her report about the cause and manner of death for Athena,

0:56.0

and the state asked if Athena suffered pain as a result of how she was killed. The defense

1:01.6

objected, but the judge allowed it, and the medical examiner said, yes, she did. They show her a photo

1:07.5

of Tanner's shoes, and she agrees this was likely the patterns on Athena's face

1:12.9

and when she was being pressed down by Tanner, that would account for that diamond pattern

1:18.3

on the back of her. On cross, they just reiterate that there were no signs of an assault. There

1:23.7

were no fractures. Her teeth were intact and the medical examiner says yes and there were no fractures, her teeth were intact, and the medical examiner says yes, and there were no

1:28.8

broken fingernails. On a redirect, the state says, a lack of injury doesn't mean that an assault

1:35.4

did not take place, and she agrees. The last witness of the day that brought in these calls is

1:41.2

Joseph Collins. He is the administrator of the Wise County Jail. There are five recordings

1:47.1

that they're going to play from calls or visitations. I've been a reading that one was played today with

1:53.0

his girlfriend Cassie. I have not heard that. I've rewound that feed three times to try to find a little

1:58.4

call in there somewhere. If I'm wrong, let me know,

2:01.7

but it looks like we still have three to go tomorrow. So maybe that's when those will come in.
