Summary

With the Netflix release of Neon Genesis Evangelion around the corner, we're rereleasing our conversation on the landmark series' first two episodes from Waypoints 10. The team examines the first two episodes, with Rob, Patrick, and Danielle giving their first ever impressions of the series, struck by it's narrative structure and striking visuals. Then Austin leads them through a discussion of the show's predecessors, it's troubled production, and complicated readings. We will be back next week with a new episode of Waypoints discussing more episodes!

What's good internet? Welcome to Waypoints for June 19th, 2019. Quick note, we're cheating.

0:07.9

This is actually an old episode of Waypoints. We're part of one, actually. Our producer

0:12.3

Cotto had a great idea, which was to pull the original conversation that we had about the

0:17.8

first two episodes of A Run Galeon, which is a conversation we had back in November when

0:23.4

the Netflix deal was first announced, the Netflix A Run Galeon release was first announced.

0:30.0

And since that's happening in like a day or two, I forget which, we felt like maybe

0:35.1

we should bring those back into this feed, let people know that we are going to, let

0:40.5

people know that we're going to keep doing kind of an Ava rewatch over the next few weeks.

0:45.2

We're still figuring out timing and what episodes to watch for that, but here's two things.

0:50.3

One, this episode you're listening to now will be about the first two episodes. There

0:55.5

are spoilers for those episodes, but not broader spoilers for this show. I'm the only one on

1:00.3

this podcast who had seen Ava before, I believe, and I'm the only one who had at least had

1:06.9

a clear memory of what that show is. I don't get into any spoilers. No one else really

1:11.7

does, except for these two episodes. I think it's probably okay to listen to this ahead

1:16.6

of watching those first two episodes, but I'm also not someone who minds spoilers that

1:20.5

much. So maybe you want to watch those two episodes, then come listen to us. That's

1:24.2

also cool. The second thing I want to say is for next week's waypoints, we're going

1:28.3

to be watching episodes three through seven of Evangelion. I don't know if that's the

1:32.8

pace we're going to keep up in general. If it's going to be four episodes a week, or

1:35.9

if it's going to be more than that or less than that, or trying to figure out kind of good

1:38.8

stopping points. And that's because we know that there are other things in the world we

1:42.8

want to talk about, and waypoints is supposed to give us space to do that. So for now, though,
