In this podcast, we’re going to talk about the 4 reasons for high blood sugars in the morning.

This condition is called the dawn phenomenon. It can happen if you are a type 1 or type 2 diabetic, or if you have insulin resistance really bad.

Causes of elevated morning blood sugar:

1. Spike in Cortisol - Normally between 12 and 3 am, you have higher insulin sensitivity in the liver, so the blood sugar works a lot better. But, cortisol which mobilizes glucose for action and stress, peaks between 6 and 9 in the morning.

2. Type 1 diabetes – There’s a growth hormone spike that can mobilize the blood sugar.

3. Type 2 diabetes – The liver is making glucose called gluconeogenesis. Also, glucagon and epinephrine are hormones that can spike blood sugar. If you are a type 2 diabetic for a long period of time, you are eventually going to lose the ability to produce insulin.

4. Consuming a lot of carbs the night before.

What to do if you have high blood sugar in the morning:

• Give it time – Do the healthy ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting

• Exercise

• Avoid carbs – especially the night before

• Take apple cider vinegar diluted with water the night before

and you're like a pre-diabetic.

1:01.6

Okay, so the first reason would be you have a spike in cortisol.

1:06.2

Normally what happens between 12 and 3 a.m. okay, you have higher insulin sensitivity in your liver,

1:15.0

so your blood sugars usually are going to be a lot better.

1:19.0

But in the early morning, this can change,

1:21.0

especially if there's higher cortisol.

1:23.0

Cortisol mobilizes glucose for action, for stress,

1:30.0

okay?

1:31.0

And cortisol peaks out at 8 o'clock in the morning.

1:34.0

Now it could be like 6 o'clock.

1:36.0

So between 6 and 8, maybe even 9 o'clock in the morning.

1:40.0

So you have this higher spike of cortisol,

1:42.0

if you look at the circadian wave of cortisol.

1:45.2

So cortisol by itself if it's overly active can just mobilize more glucose from your

liver or from your muscles or actually from protein, okay, or even
