At least that's the plan for now. So as for this week, we are still going to be doing one more

of these sermons from the great fathers of church history. And then we'll get back to the

normally scheduled content. Just like one more week with me. But the sermon you're about to hear

comes from St. Hilary of Quatier, and he's one of the great bishops and doctors of the early

church, often called the Athanasius of the West, for his fearless defense of the divinity of

Christ. St. Hillary was a careful reader of Scripture and a master at drawing out its deeper

meaning without losing its clarity. And so it's for this reason, along with the fact that we

just celebrated the Feast of St. Hillary recently, that we wanted to do this sermon in particular.

Because let's be honest, as Catholics were not very good at reading scripture,

at least most of us aren't, and there's probably even fewer of us who take the time to sit down

and read through the Psalms. I don't know about you, but sometimes the Psalms, I mean, they're very

nice, they're poetic, but well, sometimes they're just hard to understand. And so in this reflection on the

first Psalm, he's teaching us how to read the Psalms rightly, not with haste, not with sentimentality,

but with attention to who is speaking and why. What begins as a meditation on happiness

becomes a profound catechesis on the incarnation, judgment,

and the destiny of both the righteous and the ungodly. St. Hillary shows the true happiness

isn't found in avoidance, but in a will shaped by God's law and a life rooted in Christ
