Summary

We first aired this episode back in July 2019, and it was recorded in the studio when Ocean was on the international tour for his novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous. It’s a really rich and beautiful conversation, full of the kind of thoughtful insights Ocean is known for, but also a lightness and optimism that feels right for summer. And we also thought it would coincide nicely with the publication of Ocean’s latest book, a poetry collection called Time is a Mother, which is out now. But we didn't want you to miss out on our summer reading recs, so we've recorded a new intro with lots of inspiration for your holiday reads too. Enjoy! Favourite recent reads: Octavia: Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck, translated by Michael Hoffman Carrie: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt Looking forward to reading: Octavia: Intimacies by Katie Kitamura; Death Valley by Melissa Broder Carrie: The Summer Book by Tove Jansson Find a list of all recommended books at: https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/august-2023-ocean-vuong-re-run Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/litfriction Email us: litfriction@gmail.com Tweet us & find us on Instagram: @litfriction

I'm Carrie Plitt, here as always with my co-host, Octavia Bray.

Hi, Octavia.

Hi, Carrie.

0:27.6

I'm very happy to be reintroducing this author special with Ocean Wong.

We first aired this episode back in July 2019,

0:35.5

and it was recorded in the studio when Ocean was on the

international tour for his novel, On Earth, were briefly gorgeous. I was sadly away at the time,

0:44.2

so Octavia flew solo for this interview. It's a really rich and beautiful conversation,

full of the kind of thoughtful insights Ocean is known for, but also a lightness and optimism that

feels just right for summer. And we also thought it would coincide nicely with the publication

of Ocean's latest book, a poetry collection called Time as a Mother, which is out now.

1:05.7

But before we get to the show, because the original episode was an extended cut of the conversation I had with Ocean,

1:12.2

it doesn't include any recommendations. And we did not want to go without shouting out some other

1:18.1

books. Did we carry? We did not. So we're going to tell you about something we read and loved

1:23.1

lately and something we can't wait to read over the summer. Let's start with something you've read and

1:29.2

loved lately. How about you, Octavia? What have you read and loved lately? I recently read the

1:35.4

novel Kairos by the German author Jenny Urbanberg and translated by Michael Hoffman. And it's a

1:41.9

phenomenal book. She's a really, really masterful writer. You know, when you are

1:47.9

in a novel with the writer and you just feel in the safest pair of hands possible. The style is very

1:53.2

tight and very cleverly done, very claustrophobic and it's a story of this complicated love

1:59.6

affair that begins in 1989 in Berlin when the woman
