You promise your wife you'll be fine. You can make it there and back before nightfall. You have all the hubris of a much younger man because you don't want her to worry. You want her to continue her preparations for Yule. You want to return to the smell of roasting ham and wassail. And besides, you've made this journey before many times. You pick your

way through the dark forest. Every skeletal tree seems to point in a different direction. You've

walked these woods every day of your long life, but now you are hopelessly lost and alone,

and they are coming. You move as quickly as you can, but the cold bites at your toes.

One by one, you lose feeling in them. Your feet becomes so heavy, as if they are growing roots
