Summary

This week on The Trawl, Jemma and Marina steer through a week where compassion and chaos collided.

From the flotilla of medics, activists and even Greta Thunberg, risking everything to get aid into Gaza, to dockworkers in Genoa refusing to load arms shipments, there are still flashes of humanity in the darkest of times. Hugh Bonneville’s rallying cry, businesses putting morals above profit, and ordinary people prepared to be arrested for protesting against genocide — proof that not everyone in the world is a hideous f@%kwit.

But alas, back home… Labour descends into turmoil with Rayner out and reshuffle chaos in. Clive Lewis nails why so many think “they’re all the same,” while Jemma and Marina discuss how her departure from the upper echelons of cabinet makes them feel. Meanwhile, Farage is busy lecturing Rayner on tax only to get exposed for his own questionable dealings. Quelle surprise.

And then there’s the Reform Party Conference. Andrea Jenkyns makes an entrance that has to be seen to be believed and heard to be horrified. Femi reminds us why the “clowns” are more dangerous than they look, and Paul Mason swoons over the lot of them. Spoiler: it’s terrifying

The Trawl ladies wrap up with Under Rated's and a Larry & Paul pudding to cleanse your palate.

The good, the bad, the ludicrous — it’s all in this episode of The Trawl.

I'm an insomnia, I'm an insomnia, staring at the ceiling. Hello and welcome to the troll,

0:19.9

the echo chamber that dissects the drama and delusion of the week and then bungs in the odd bit that will hopefully restore your faith in humanity.

I'm Gemma Forte.

And I'm Marina Perkis.

And this week, while precisely nothing about what is happening in Gaza is positive, it's worth noting that while governments dither, politicians' posture,

0:39.3

safe in the knowledge that due to their ridiculous legislation, police officers will be busy

0:43.9

arresting veterans, pensioners and other peaceful people for being terrorists. Cheers Labor.

0:51.3

Yep. The fact that so many anti-genocide protesters were prepared to be

0:55.8

carted off by the police last weekend is reassuring in itself. Also last week, as we mentioned

1:01.4

before, a flotilla of boats carrying medics and activists set off, packed with aid and supplies,

1:07.7

in a desperate bid to thwart Israel's total blockade.

1:12.2

Now, some commentators were calling this performative, you know, what's the point?

1:16.0

And it's like, well, what else are people supposed to do?

1:18.9

And I personally thought it was very moving to witness actual action in stark contrast

1:23.8

to sort of government's performative hand-wringing, shall we say.

1:27.2

These boats sailing behind me are going to Gaza.

1:30.0

They're part of the global Sumo's flotilla, the largest attempt yet to break the Israeli

blockade of the Gaza Strip by sea.

1:37.6

Thousands have gathered here today in Barcelona to wish them safe sailing.

1:42.0

Yeah, unbelievable.

1:42.9

So when they say performative, if just one boat with just some aid, one bag of aid gets to the people that need it, then it's not bloody performative, is it?

1:55.1

No.
