Summary

Just about every source of information about nazi serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin gets the name of one of his victims wrong. In my search for information about the man who was murdered in Falls Church, Virginia in August of 1979, I came up mostly empty. We've erased a man from the story of his own murder because it's easier to tell a story about a racist than it is to talk about racism.

It's not a weird little guy.

It's not the end of the long, meandering story I've been trying to find the end of for weeks.

I'll get there when I get there.

This isn't quite a typical episode of weird little guys, but I hope you'll stick around for this story anyway.

Because today, I want to give a man his name back.

I've been doing a lot of navel gazing in this series,

1:05.6

over the last month or so as I've been writing about Nazi serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin.

1:14.1

I mean, I've been really agonizing over my participation in what I feel is the very exploitative genre of true crime.

1:21.6

I'm trying to tell a story that is, in most respects, firmly within that territory.

1:29.0

I'm telling it my own way, winding an in and out of the traditional beats of a crime story to weave in my side characters and the broader historical context of the white power movement this man is

operating within. And obviously, the show is about the weird little guy at the center of it.

I don't typically spend a great deal of time writing in detail about the targets of the men I write
