Summary

We're used to conflating political parties (Republican and Democrat) with political ideologies (conservative and liberal), but the two were very distinct only a few decades ago. In this episode of Rationally Speaking, Julia talks with political scientist Hans Noel about why the Democrats became the party of liberalism and the Republicans the party of conservatism, whether voters are hypocrites in the way they apply their ostensible ideology, and whether politicians are motivated by ideals or just self-interest.

I'm your host, Julia Galeith, and with me is today's guest Hans Noel.

1:19.9

Hans is a political scientist at Georgetown University, and his research focuses, among other things,

1:25.6

on political ideology and political parties and the

1:29.4

relationship between the two of them. So, for example, questions like, are ideological

1:33.7

principles really the main motivating force behind the policies that parties try to enact? Are

1:39.3

the main motivating force behind how voters vote and which parties voters align themselves with.

1:45.8

Or are there other things going on like self-interest or the desire for re-election?

1:50.8

And ideological principles are just kind of a fig leaf for those things.

1:54.2

So that's an example of one of the questions that Hans studies.

1:57.4

And we're going to talk about that cluster of questions, along with some broader

2:01.6

questions about political science as a field and what kinds of things political science

2:06.8

knows with confidence. So we should really jump in. Hans, welcome to rationally speaking.

2:11.7

Great. Thanks for having me. One of the striking facts that you've touched on in your writing

2:17.1

that I think a lot of people aren't quite aware of is how this relationship between ideologies like liberal or conservative and political parties like Democrat or Republican is we sort of take for granted that those overlap.
