Hey! It's Bullseye. I'm Jesse Thorne. About 80 miles south of L.A., where we record our show,

there is a city called Oceanside, population 175,000 or so.

Depends what time of year it is, how many tourists are in town.

To the south is Carlsbad.

That's where Legoland is and also, you know, restaurants that serve like Cevice

tostadas and fancy orange wine. To the north, nestled

inside maybe 250 square miles of Chaparral is Camp Pendleton, one of the largest marine bases in the

country. Please understand, California has a lot of coastline, 840 miles, and a lot of that coastline is fancy and getting fancier.

If you visited some quiet working class beach town in the 90s, there's probably a Lulu Lemon

on the main street these days. Oceanside is one of the last coastal towns that doesn't have a Lulu Lemon, at least not yet.

It's a city that feels, and I mean this in the best possible way, a little trapped in amber.

You might find the occasional upscale coffee shop on the main drag, but you can also get a solid, cheap burrito while you get your windows tinted.
