Welcome back to another episode of five minutes in church history. On this episode we're going to be looking at an artist.

This is Raphael. His dates are 1483 to 1520.

And while he is famous for so many wonderful pieces of art, we're going to look at one piece of art in particular.

It's known as the Stansa della signatora.

Now it's not just a single piece of art, actually, it's an entire room.

And you might not have heard of that before,

the Stansa della signatora,

but you've likely heard of the painting,

the School of Athens.

This painting depicts Plato and Aristotle

right in the center, and Plato of course and in the center.

And Plato, of course, is the elder,

and Aristotle is the younger.

And Raphael paints Plato with a book in his hand.

And the book he's holding is the Tamais,

one of Plato's dialogues and he has Aristotle holding

one of his books too and Aristotle was holding his book ethics and you can see a

little bit of the differences between the two philosophers and their approaches and they of course are surrounded by the other great Greek philosophers and there it is the school of Athens.

I remember seeing this painting years ago and sort of had the impression that that's what it was, a painting, framed and

hanging on a wall. But that's not what it is at all. In fact, it's an entire wall and Raphael

actually painted it to fit the contours of the room,

so it goes over the doorways
