You would have heard of the phrase, put out the stops or putting out all the stops.

If you are not an organist, you might not have realised that that phrase does in fact come from the pipe organ

because we put out stops to make the organ go louder.

If we put out basically all the stops.

It does that.

Although we can't actually pull them all out because if we did,

it wouldn't sound particularly pleasant.

It would sound something like this.

So we put out most of the stops instead.

Boy, a big old church pipe organ.
