I.D. Elias has just returned from a long day at a Boca Raton retirement home,

where she's a chaplain and gives sermons.

It's I.D.'s way of giving back to the community, and she usually enjoys it.

But this Friday in March 2007 is a difficult one.

She spent much of the day consoling a woman whose daughter is dying.

A woman there in one of the retirement homes, her daughter was dying,

and they were going to take her off a machine, but her daughter was in New York.

And this woman lived here in the retirement home, and she was very, very upset.

And so I sat and I talked to her, something like we're talking now,

to talk about the daughter.

And I found it very fulfilling, but also very tiring.

I.D. has a grown daughter of her own, Randy Gorinberg.

So the visit is especially upsetting.

When I.D. gets home, she lies down and turns on the 5 o'clock news.

The picture on the TV shows police hovering over a body that's covered with a blanket.

A woman had been shot to death, and dumped from a car by a park, not far from I.D.'s home.

I looked at this covered body and I said, oh my God,

some family is going to be so upset tonight when they find out who that is.

I said that to myself, I said it.

Later that evening, I.D.'s family calls her.
