Summary

Michael Owen crashed on to the scene in May 1997 in a Premier League game for Liverpool against Wimbledon, and marked it with a goal. Obviously. From then on his career was a whirlwind that involved setting international tournaments alight, a move abroad to the biggest club in the world, injuries, and goals. Lots and lots of goals.

Marcus caught up with Michael for this latest edition of Ramble Meets... to discuss his career, what it takes to get to the very top, a certain night in St Etienne in the summer of 1998, and how he views his time at Real Madrid.

This episode of Ramble Meets... is available to acast+ subscribers from Wednesday 5th September, and all Football Ramble subscribers a week later from the 12th.

This interview took place at Pro:Direct LDN19 for the launch of Umbro’s Speciali 98 collection, a boot inspired by that night in St. Etienne. To check out the full collection head over to prodirectsoccer.com.

0:20.0

When you start you know you score that goal away at Wimbledon and it just all went uphill from there.

0:26.5

When you were a young teenager trying to get into that Liverpool first team and obviously did so successfully.

0:32.5

What were your goals? Did you think to yourself I just want to get in the first team or did you think I've got something on and I really want to show the world what I've got?

0:41.5

Yeah I mean it's very difficult to say I suppose I know what the answer is but you don't want to...

0:48.5

You spend all your life thinking a certain way but try not to let it come across because you'd come across as a right arrogant thing.

0:55.5

But I was better than everybody as a kid.

0:58.5

I knew I wasn't going to just be a footballer. It was how far in the world's pecking order I could get to is the simple answer.

1:05.5

I mean I broke every record that was to break for England and every youth team game and things like that.

1:11.5

So it's not pleasant saying it but you asked me so that's how I thought...

1:16.5

But I'm glad you did say that because it's almost quite reassuring because you know I played football at grassroots level.

1:22.5

Didn't get anywhere and so many people do. But if you do have an ounce of talent even at school level or whatever level you're playing at, you want people...

1:31.5

You want to show people what you're doing it's your art it's your...

1:35.5

Oh no embarrassment in terms of showing it.

1:38.5

Oh I would show off to the world if I could when I was a kid but...

1:43.5

I mean it didn't for us not to know what I mean.

1:46.5

But mentally you know as you've just asked me, did you think you were just going to come on and be a first in play or did you think you was well no way?

1:54.5

I knew I was going to be a footballer from when I was eight or nine I was miles clear of anyone else I was breaking records for the county to be when I was three years younger than everyone else.

2:04.5

I was playing under eleven for the county at seven years old. I mean it was just unheard of.
