Summary

On today’s episode of Ramble Meets… we welcome former Leicester, Liverpool and England legend Emile Heskey! With the recent launch of his new book, Even Heskey Scored, Emile speaks to Luke about his storied 24-year professional career.

From breaking through at Leicester City at 17, to winning a hatful of trophies with Liverpool and earning 64 international caps, this candid interview gives a unique insight into a man at the heart of England’s ‘Golden Generation.’ Emile also discusses the importance of team benefitting from his talents rather than chasing individual statistics, the atmosphere around the England squad throughout the 2000s and the burgeoning discussions around mental health in modern football.

Amel, I wonder how you look back on your career and how it went for you. Is it something you look

0:18.2

back on with great pride? Yeah, it is. When you, when, obviously, I get to see the 100 Premier League

0:33.9

you know, coming from, coming from Leicester, winning things with Leicester as well, which was amazing,

0:41.5

considering we wasn't, we was favored to go down. As every team that comes up into the Premier League

0:46.8

is favored to go down, we actually stayed top off the league table and went to three cup finals.

0:52.6

Yeah, amazing. And you started your career as a very young player really, didn't you?

0:58.8

What was it like making your first team debut at 17? It was, it wasn't as daunting as you'd

1:05.2

think, because I was helping out in the change rooms. I was in and around the first team, but I was

1:14.0

training with them and then going with the youth team, back with the youth team. But then

1:18.7

traveling sometimes with the first team, just to see what it's like, but I'll be the one that

1:24.4

will be making the tease, picking up all the kit after helping the team man and stuff like that.

1:29.5

But then that day, a QPR away, we about three or four of them felt, felt ill. Oh, really? Okay.

1:36.8

And no one had said anything to me or anything about that. So I was the actually down before that

1:42.6

couple of places. Oh, right. Okay. And they imagined in ripping back the paper just to show the team

1:49.2

and I'm playing up front. How did you feel? I didn't have much time to get nervous because it was

1:55.7

literally, they do that an hour before the game. Right. Okay. Or hour and a half or whatever it is

1:59.3

before the game. So it's got changed when I'm played. It wasn't, we lost two nil QPR away.

2:07.2

But it gave me a little insight on where I needed to brush up on. Was it hard then? Oh, yeah,

2:12.0

it was tough. Was it noticeably tougher than the team the training you'd had?

2:17.0
