Feel your mind quiet, like the last traces of daylight fading into the night.

That week at school, Dan Reese continued his taunting of faith, and Walter finally rose up against him.

Once Dan accused Walter's mother of writing lies, Walter pushed Dan off the fence he was standing on. It was agreed that the two would

fight it out the next day after school. Walter was nervous up to the moment, but after receiving

the first blow to his face, he saw red and lunged at Dan, ending up sitting astride his opponent,

who was on his back on the floor with a bloody nose. Dan took it all back, and Walter walked

home, not triumphant, but satisfied.

Mary Vance was due to spend some time with Nan and Die at Ingleside,

and met them, along with Faith and Una, chewing spruce gum in the valley.
