Hi everyone. On today's episode you'll hear my conversation with my friend Rafael Augustine

about his experience as an immigrant in America and how he's working to put more diversity

and accuracy into the stories we tell.

My name is Rafael Agustín, I'm a writer on the TV show Jane the Virgin, and I am the

executive director of LaLief and the Youth Cinema Project.

Oh, did I mention I am a formerly undocumented American? Well, sorry, not sorry.

Tell us a little bit about your story.

My story is crazy because when I was in high school, I was,

were you here? I was in the United States in high school and I picture this.

First of all, growing up, I always thought I looked like Zach Morris.

Like I really did, it was crazy.

So I modeled my high school career. He does not look like Zach Morris.

He does not look like Zach Morris.

He's like a cholo-brown, better looking version of Zach Morris.

Yes. So I always thought, okay, I'm going to model my high school career after his,

so I too decided to become the class president, and then I too became the prom king and the

honor roll student. Then I applied to go to college and I discovered I was undocumented.

So you had no idea before college that you were undocumented.

No, and most undocumented. Did your mom just not tell you?
