I'm your host, retired NYPD Sergeant Bill Cannon, a 27-year veteran of the NYPD.

Today, a trial started in Hartford County, Maryland.

And I think we all remember this case.

It occurred in August 23 when a mother of five by the name of Rachel Marin was jogging in a park.

And she was attacked and brutally murdered and left for dead inside that park.

And it was just a horrific, horrific crime.

I won't go into the details of it.

But it turned out, after an intense investigation, that involved a lot of outstanding police work because DNA became

involved. And we've spoken about on this show, the CODIS database, which is combined DNA index system.

And the DNA from the crime from Rachel Marin was submitted to CODIS.

And that DNA was a match to a home invasion assault involving a woman and a nine-year-old girl in Los Angeles.

And we all, when we go over the show, we talk about the two categories of DNA in Kodas,

and one is offender DNA, and the second category is forensic DNA. And this was forensic DNA because the

DNA matched, but they did not have a perpetrator. They did not have a name, but they had a crime

scene. So through that evidence, they were able to come up with this sketch of this individual.

And then it was a long time and a lot of work getting this person identified who turned out to be an individual by the name of Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, who was an illegal alien from El Salvador.

And this is where it becomes really complex.

And of course, politics got involved here because there were three horrific murders in the last couple of years

involving illegal aliens in this in this country and one of course was rachel morin the
