Rachel, you played in your first test match in 1960 against South Africa. How did the team do on that tour?

We had four test matches all together and we drew three in one one. So we hold the series over South Africa at the moment.

How many other series have you played in?

I played in 1963 in this country in three tests against Australia. Then another three tests against New Zealand in 1966 also in this country.

And then I had three in Australia and three in New Zealand during the winter.

Yes, and that last series last winter the team was undefeated.

Yes, yes they were.

When were you elected captain?

This was in 1966 when the New Zealanders came over to England.

How long are the test matches? How many days?

We play for three days because we perhaps tend to get on with things a little bit more than the men do at some stages.

Fine. And in the Australian and New Zealand tour apart from the test matches of course you've played lots and lots of local matches.

Yes, yes. We played in most of the states in Australia with the exception of Queensland and Northern territories.

And then in New Zealand we travelled from the top of North Island to the bottom of South Island.

How long was the tour?

Four and a half months.

Was it?

Any difficulty in keeping all those ladies happy on a segregated community or so long?

This I thought might be a problem because you know a lot of women are together for any length of time.

They tend to get rather at one another strokes but in fact there were no problems at all there.

They're a marvellous team and they've all got a tremendous sense of humour and they all enjoyed singing when things weren't going quite so well and this helped us a lot.
