A pilot with more than four decades of experience in the air joins us to answer one of your

0:05.5

top questions this week.

0:07.1

How safe is it to fly?

0:08.8

I'm Jenna, and this is smarter news.

0:15.9

We've all likely seen the video of a plane upside down on a tarmac in Toronto and likely asked the same

0:22.0

question. How did that even happen? That's one of the questions I asked Scott Petillo. He has spent

0:27.5

more than 45 years in the air, both as a military and commercial pilot. Scott, tell me, when did you

0:34.3

first realize that you actually wanted to become a pilot?

0:54.3

Oh, goodness. I was in high school, and my father was a pilot. My mom was a pilot. My mother, who first flew back in the late 1940s. So she was kind of a trendsetter in her day. So both my parents were pilots. I kind of thought I wanted to do it, but I wasn't sure. But my first solo flight was in Hawaii. So my father was military stationed in Hawaii,

1:04.5

the commercial pilot experience, which is all the more reason we wanted to talk to you about

1:16.2

the news that is in front of us, because we have a story that's out of Toronto where we had

1:20.8

a plane flip over. And we've all seen the footage for that. I want to talk to you a little bit

1:25.1

about that. But the number one question I'm getting from our community at Smarter News is, what in the world? What should we

1:32.5

even think about when it comes to flying right now? Because we've seen a spate of several different

1:38.2

events that, you know, have captured the world's attention and can make even the most confident flyer a little bit nervous.

1:47.4

So what do you make of just what we've seen over the last several weeks?

1:51.5

A lot of different incidents that raise concerns about safety.

1:55.5

Well, I think people should be raising concerns about safety.

2:00.0

We would be foolish not to be.
