In this day and age, what will it take to become a Main Street millionaire?

0:04.4

Let's ask the women who wrote the book on it.

0:06.3

My name is Jenna, and this is Smarter News.

0:15.5

All right, today we're speaking with Cody Sanchez, an amazing businesswoman and author.

0:20.6

I should actually preface that not just an author, a an amazing businesswoman and author. I should actually

0:21.2

preface that, not just an author, a New York Times bestselling author, Cody Sanchez,

0:26.4

of Main Street millionaire. Cody, I have a collector's item because this is the first

0:30.1

dish, right? The next version is going to have the New York Times on the front, right?

0:34.7

It is. I know. Yeah, we got to know more printing of the ones without

0:37.7

New York Times because that thing is miserable to try to hit. Yes, it is. It is. And only authors know this.

0:43.8

I know it a little bit for my, for my husband, thankfully. But congratulations. It's a huge

0:47.9

accomplishment. And I'm really excited to talk to you about your book and your mission in life.

And how did you then transition from journalism to business? Yeah. Well, I started out as a

1:13.5

journalist along the U.S.-Mexico border covering human trafficking, drug smuggling. And really,

1:20.0

I was following my curiosity with this like single idea of like, how is my last name Sanchez?

1:25.5

And so we got a grant from the Howard Buffett Foundation to cover this sort of journalism. And I did that for about a year and a half while I was still in school. I graduated a little early. And from ASU. So like it wasn't that big of an accomplishment. We were mostly partying. I took a small break to go do journalism. But what was fascinating to me is when I did journalism, I wanted to cover this idea of like, what creates freedom. That was my idea.

2:01.2

Like how do people get freedom?

2:02.8

And at the time I thought it was politically driven, but now I actually think most freedom is driven by money.

2:07.7

And so seeing all of it live made me realize, wait a second, it's actually not the politicians who save us.
