Welcome to Quick Fix. I'm Courtney Martin. In today's main episode of How To, I brought in Soraya Chimali to help me harness my anger. She wrote the award-winning book, Rage Becomes Her, in 2018. Since then, we in America have gotten more angry as vital rights and protections have been stripped away, democracy has been

eroded, and white male supremacy has once again surged. So that's why, Slate Plus listeners,

I asked Soraya to tell us about her forthcoming book, All We Want is Everything, How We Dismantle Male

Supremacy. I pitched it first just before last year's election because I thought, either way, let's say

Harris won, there was going to be a huge backlash, and it would be multidimensional,

but significantly anti-feminist. And in that way of intersectionality, you would see black and brown women pay particularly

high price for all of the related forms of backlash and oppression.

And so either way, I thought we should talk about this problem, which I define as a problem

of male supremacy being invisible. So even when we talk about resurgent white supremacy,

which we have to do every day without fail, there's just no way to understand white supremacy

without understanding white male supremacy

and without understanding that you can't control racial hierarchies, you can't maintain xenophobic

policies and cultures unless you control women and their reproduction.

And so those two things are always hand in hand,

mutually constructing each other. And yet you don't hear the words. And the words male supremacy

do something different to our understanding than, for example, patriarchy or gender equality.

The example I use the most to illustrate that is gender equality. Most of us talk in terms of gender equality. And most people, I think, on average, if you said we should have gender equality, they'll either say we have it and feminism has gone overboard or yes, we still need it. and they will mean women should have what men have.

Women should get what men get.
