By the time this episode is broadcast, it will be the middle of May, and that landscape across the old

front line along the former western fronts will have changed once more. The signs of summer

will be everywhere. Swifts and swallows will be cutting the air above the Somme or Northern France

and the sound of the skylark as it nests

in the rough grass across that landscape will be ever present and the seasonal changes that

we see across that old front line are part of the general changes on that ever-changing

landscape during the last few months, there have been

many new discoveries on the battlefields. It forever gives up its secrets. Solders remains,

more than 20 of them have been found on an archaeological dig in Flanders, and the general work that takes place in the late spring and as it moves towards summer

also prompts the discovery of archaeology and the bodies of soldiers who've been missing for more than a century now.

And through all that we learn more about this ever-present, ever-fascinating subject of the Great War.
