So let's begin.

Having been on the road on various battlefield wreckies, It's been nice in the last couple of weeks

to have a pause and stop and catch up on some reading, do some work on the podcast,

and also have a look at the kind of questions that have been sent in in recent weeks.

They continue to come in thick and fast, but please don't stop sending them in because you ask

some really, really intelligent and interesting questions that make me think about all kinds

of subjects connected to the First World War and hopefully they will be of interest to the

wider audience here. And again, we're kind of gone through our fifth

anniversary period and it's been good to reflect on how the podcast has developed over those five

years. And one of the things I do think that I've enjoyed the most in the way we've tried

to do things differently with the podcast are these Q&A episodes so long may that continue but let's get

down to things this week and all of the questions have come in via email for this particular episode

and the first is from Samuel Iers who asks I have a question regarding the front line of trenches in the First World War.

What happened where the trench system crossed a road?

Was the road simply closed and dug up,

or was there a kind of checkpoint at the site?
