Summary

In our latest round-up of Questions and Answers we look at Memorials to non-white soldiers on the Western Front, whether 'battle bars' were ever planned for WW1 British and Commonwealth campaign medals, the award of the 'Blue Max' to German soldiers, and were ordinary soldiers told about the explosion of huge mines like the one under Hawthorn Ridge on the Somme. Welcome to some more questions and answers here on the old front line.

0:07.6

These are questions submitted by you, the podcast, listeners,

0:11.4

and each month we select some of the best questions that have been submitted via email and the Discord server to answer here and hopefully give us all fresh perspectives

0:24.4

and new knowledge of this vast subject of the Great War.

0:29.3

So let's begin.

0:32.5

One of the things that I like about the question and answer episodes of the podcast

0:37.2

is that it gives us an opportunity to discuss some quite broad subjects when it comes to the history of the Great War.

0:45.5

make us hopefully think about those subjects, learn from it,

1:06.7

and perhaps seek out more knowledge.

1:09.3

but they've certainly made me think about future ideas for podcasts further down the line.

1:23.2

And those subjects that we're going to talk about this time are just as broad and also come from

1:29.6

quite a broad element of our audience, people from North America and Australia, as well as from

1:37.5

the UK. And it was quite interesting over the Christmas period to have a look at our podcast

1:42.7

statistics to see who listens to the podcast,

1:46.2

where they listen from. It's probably not a surprise that most of the audience is from the UK,

1:51.1

but there's a growing element of listeners from the United States and also from Australia and

1:58.7

New Zealand. And one thing that was particularly of interest to me is the age of our audience.

2:04.8

Now, I don't know exactly how some of these podcast platforms work out the age of listeners
