Good evening, everyone. I'm thrilled to be back for the third year in a row to moderate a career retrospective conversation with the Burbank International Film Festival's industry honoree.

And with all due respect to the prior honorees, one could not hope for a cooler

honoree than we have this year. He is a screenwriter, director, producer, actor, author, and all-around film expert who has been described by Time magazine as a cinematic virtuoso,

by the New York Times as someone who changed the topography of American cinema,

and by the late Peter Bogdanovich, as the single most influential filmmaker of his generation.

At the age of 62, he has nine features under his belt, which have garnered massive acclaim,

collectively grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide,

and brought him the Cannes Film Festival's Palm Door, and two best original screenplay Oscars,

a tally matched only by Woody Allen, Charles Burkett, Billy Wilder, and Patty Chayefsky.

And he also has guided nine performances to Oscar nominations, three of which resulted in wins.

Given this virtually unparalleled level of achievement and the fact that he says he will direct only one more feature before hanging up his megaphone,

I think it is more than appropriate to take a moment or an evening, this evening, to pause and appreciate

just how far this gentleman has come from his humble beginnings, not far from here, and

how much he has achieved with his films, portions of which were shot in this very city.
