about queerness during the golden age of piracy. I'd like to acknowledge the Wandre-Wroong people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional

owners of the land on which we record this podcast and pay respects to their elders past and

present. We recognise them as the custodians of an oral history tradition far older than this

podcast. We have some content warnings before we start this episode. We'll be discussing

contemporary homophobia, including the outlawing of sex between men and related trials,

and punishments including execution and the pillory and related mob violence. There will also be

numerous minor references to more general violence, including executions, whippings, gun violence,

jewels and beatings. There'll also

be references to slavery, the heavy consumption of alcohol and sex, including sex between

adults and minors. So if any of that sounds like something that you don't want to listen to,

please feel free to skip this episode and listen to a different episode instead.

Are you telling me, like, that pirates aren't fun? As per usual, I feel like the list of content warning sounds way more intense than it is,

and the pirates were fun, but pirates also did, like, hit each other a fair bit.

I also wanted to quickly apologize for the delays in bringing this episode out.

I have had some health issues, but we're here,

we're doing it, it's happening. I also wanted to apologize for the fact that we will not be

discussing Anne Bonnie and Mary Reid in this episode, as I believed we said we would be doing on

our social media. I did initially plan to include Anne and Mary in this episode, but it just

kind of got too lengthy, and I decided it would be better to give them their own episode at some point in the future instead.
