Hi everybody, welcome to Dan Snow's History Hit. It's the start of another week. It's exciting.

0:05.7

We got lots going on this week as the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings this week. We've got a bunch

0:09.4

of medieval history podcasts and TV shows on the channel coming out. You're including a big

0:16.1

original documentary on the Battle of Hastings involving some of the best historians currently

0:21.6

working in the field. This podcast about something completely different. This is the excellent

0:26.5

Sasha Coward. He's a queer historian. He's a broadcast, he works museums, he does tours of

0:32.4

queer history around London and he's an absolute legend. He's coming on the podcast because it's

0:36.3

the 50th anniversary of G.L.F which was the four runner of Pride as you will hear. I went to

0:42.0

about queer history. History hit TV is having one of its insane, autumnal sales because this week

documentary, our original content on that Battle of Hastings. The tumultuous year of 1066.

0:57.6

You can see that. Lots of other 11th century content. If you get a history hit.tv. It's like the

1:03.4

Netflix for history. And if you use the code 1066106666, you get a month for free. Then you get three

1:11.2

months. There's one pound euro or dollar for each of those three months. So you're deep into 2021

1:16.4

and you're only paying a dollar a month. Crazy. So head over there and check it out.

1:27.3

Sasha thanks so much for coming on the podcast. It's delightful to be here. Thanks for having me.

1:31.2

You should probably tell us what queer history is. For a lot of people that might sound a little

1:34.8

bit threatening or a little bit alien. And I guess I might as well pre-fix us by saying I'm going

1:39.1

to use the word queer a lot. Some people feel a bit uncomfortable with that word and I completely

1:43.7

understand why a lot of people who are part of the lesbian gay bisexual transgender community

1:48.0

also feel uncomfortable with that word. So I grew up in the word queer was kind of an insult

1:53.5

as well as an identity. So it was kind of reclaiming something which was used as a negative
