Hello, this is Carl Raymond, host of the Gilded Gentleman History podcast, where every two weeks we journey into worlds light and dark in

America's Gilded Age, Francis Bellet Puck, and England's late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

When I began the Gilded Gentleman, I was committed to try to tell stories of the Gilded Age,

not just based in New York and the East Coast, but with forays into other cities, with looks

at other historic personalities that enormously influenced this time. After all, the Gilded Age was not

an East Coast phenomenon.

San Francisco, Chicago, and St. Louis and other cities all played roles in the development

of the Gilded Age wealth and an American society. In fact, I devoted an earlier episode to

Chicago with historian Tom Miller in Chicago's Bertha Palmer,

more than Mrs. Astor. Although the East Coast Unisphere that was centered between Fifth and Madison

avenues on New York's Gold Coast, was interesting to really understand all aspects of the gilded age,

we must move farther west.

I could not be more excited to do just that today.

We will be taking a look at Denver at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains

in the years of the 1890s and exploring the world of one very special woman, herself a transplant from the

south named Louise Sneed Hill, who took a tavern-filled cultural backwater and nearly single-handedly

put it on the map. But more than that, of course, by her model and influence, she forged a new kind of

modern society and a very new and modern role model for women.

I am joined today by author and historian Shelby Carr-Newhauser, who has delved deeply into the life and

influences of Louise Sneed Hill in her book, Queen of Denver, Louise Sneed Hill, and the

emergence of modern high society.
