The shock is so great in quantum mechanics that we still have not figured out how to really process it.

0:06.7

How does quantum mechanics confront our view of reality even shattering it?

0:12.2

Amanda Gefter, science writer and author of trespassing on Einstein's lawn,

0:17.9

dismantles long-held notions about quantum mechanics, proposing a revolutionary

0:23.1

perspective where observers don't just perceive reality, they actively participate in its creation.

0:31.8

In this episode, we'll delve into how our beliefs shape the quantum world, why Descartes' subject-objects split is fundamentally

0:39.5

flawed, and how emergence could redefine our scientific understanding.

0:44.3

Prepare to have your concept of reality transformed as we venture into the quantum realm,

0:49.7

where nothing is quite as it seems.

Probably the most formative conversation that I had, even though it was a very, very brief

1:01.5

conversation, was one with the physicist John Wheeler.

1:06.0

So Wheeler was this legendary American physicist who, you know, this is who came up with the terms black hole

1:12.8

and wormhole and he did revolutionary work in everything, general relativity, nuclear physics,

1:19.7

quantum mechanics, and had a very sort of profound philosophical mind, but also spoke in this

1:26.2

very enigmatic Yoda-like way. And I had the chance to meet him,

1:35.1

well, this is a whole long story, but my father and I snuck into a physics conference that was

1:41.0

being held in Wheeler's honor. It was in honor of his 90th birthday at Princeton.

1:46.7

And this is in 2002, I believe. And it was this amazing conference and all the best

1:53.6

businesses were up there giving talks and everything. And Wheeler was just sort of sitting at the

1:57.8

front. And, you know, he was 90 90 at this point he was a bit hard of hearing

2:01.6

but he was still deeply obsessed with all of these big questions about you know how come existence

2:07.6

and why the quantum and all of the questions that I think you kurt are interested in and so you know
