She writes, does the president really have the power to issue an executive order to forgive student loan debt?

If so, does Congress have any power to stop it?

That's a great question and the reason people don't like lawyers among other reasons is because the answer is not clear.

And so I'll give you kind of all sides of it. I'm not sure it can be done with executive order. I think there's this old law called the Higher Education Act.

And there are people who read that and of course that's a that's a law passed by Congress that gives the secretary of the education as delegated to him or her by the president.

The power to forgive or absolve certain debts. That's the way some people read that act. It's the Higher Education Act.
