Today's quick Q&A comes from my community. I can't remember who asked it, but the question was,

what do I do about volunteer plants? Now before I've actually defined what a volunteer plant is and then

tell you my thoughts on the matter, let me tell you a funny story that happened just yesterday.

My husband and I were out on the patio area.

It was a pretty evening and we were just kind of walking around looking at things and he noticed

beside one of my elevated beds, a smaller one that I have for flowers usually, that there was a pretty

full grown kale plant growing in the rocks. We have rocks in our patio

area where we don't have concrete. And he was like, can I pull this? What is this? He could tell that

it wasn't a normal weed like he was seeing in the rest of the rocky area this time of year.

And I'm pretty sure he knew it was kale,

even though we really don't eat a whole lot of kale here.

And he doesn't like kale.

And so he's like, let's just get rid of it.

And my response was, well, I'll just put it in one of my salads.

I'll cut it.

Don't worry.

Don't take it out. but if that kale seed decided to grow into a full-sized kale plants in the rocks,

then I want to let it grow.

And he's like, Jill, plants don't have feelings.

And so we just kind of had this banter back and forth, which was kind of funny.

But that's what a volunteer plant is.
