The simple answer is it's a completely different system. So there is no such thing as opposition really in American politics. There's in Congress is what they'd say the minority party, you have the majority party, either controls the House or the Senate, you have the minority party. That's probably the closest thing. But given that the presidential cycle only occurs once every four years, they have primaries to determine who is going to be that presidential candidate.
