Summary

On this episode, I discuss pyridoxine pharmacology, adverse effects, and important clinical uses.



Pyridoxine is most well known for its potential to reduce the likelihood of isoniazid-induced neuropathy.



Another common indication of pyridoxine is its use for nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy.



Pyridoxine plays an important role in the production of heme, so deficiency will increase the risk for anemia.

So with that, let's get into the drug of the day.

And that is Piroxene.

This is actually more of a classified as a supplement.

It is vitamin B6.

This is a water-soluble vitamin, and it can be used for medication purposes besides simply just deficiency.

So with that said, let's get a little bit of background.

So mechanistically, periodoxine is converted in the body or transformed to

periodoxal. And this is an important co-factor for numerous different things, but primarily

it can aid in metabolism of fats and carbs and proteins.

So obviously that's going to play an important role in how your body functions.

It also can aid in the production of GABA.

So as you remember, that's a central nervous system neurotransmitter,

that can act on or enhance GABA. Many I've talked about in the past, so benzodiazepines
