...and by... Although it is not expected that the vote on the proposed Panama Canal Treaty revisions will come to the floor until next spring,

the hearings begin this week, and of course the controversy has raged since a year ago.

It is roughly correct, I think, to say that the majority of the American people at this point opposed the new treaty,

be that most conservatives tend to oppose it, and see that most, though not all American liberals, tend to favor it.

Conspicuous among the opponents of the treaty revisions is

Mrs. Phyllis Schlafly. Mrs. Schlafly has appeared before on firing line in her role as the

principal American figure in opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment. She appears, by the way,

to be winning that particular engagement.

Are there being few indications that the three necessary states needed to confirm or prepared to do so.

But meanwhile, she has turned her copious energies to the question of the Panama Canal

and will no doubt testify before the relevant committees of Congress.

And Mrs. Schlafly has a huge constituency from coast to coast,

is often spoken of as a political candidate.
