Summary

You want to get better at golf, so you start tracking some stats in your game in addition to score alone. Are those stats going to give you useful information that you can use to shape your practice plan? In this episode, Mark, Lou, and Greg talk about traditional golf stats like putts per round or fairways per round, and the ways that those numbers might even mislead a golfer to practice things that she might already be very proficient at.

Question for you, Lewis, as the Chiefs, that hole here, and Greg Charmer's with us as well.

0:06.5

I've got a question for you, Lou, puts per round.

0:11.3

Is that a good stat to keep for people?

0:13.5

People talk to me about collecting stats.

0:15.4

They know I do stuff with Arcos, they see it on my clubs and what have you,

0:19.6

and they want to talk about stats, and then they say, you know, I do count puts per round and I kind of know how many fairways I hit that what does that tell me is that good? And then I say like, you know, do you understand strokes gained? And they go on and explain. So for the people listening, let's talk about like puts per round, fairways hit, are they good stats worth doing?

0:38.2

And then what the strokes game really mean for golfers.

0:41.1

I would bet that the three of us are all guilty of getting a scorecard.

0:45.4

And on the top line, writing your scoredown on the hole.

0:48.9

And then in three lines below, that writing green hit, number of putts, fairway hit. and tracking. No, I've never done that. I've never done that. I do it in my head after I've played. I'd never write on the school. Have you ever done that? I can remember every shot. Not written on the school. Yeah, a lot of people do that. That's really, yeah, well, you two are anomalies. A lot of people do that. No.

1:14.3

You provide an example and the other two people that are doable with. You're the anomalies.

1:15.8

It's very common.

1:17.2

The difference, and I've noticed this with better players to not as good players,

1:24.4

is how much good players remember every shot.

1:28.2

I can recite rounds from when I was 18.

1:31.3

Yeah, me too.

1:32.3

So writing down on the card is just bizarre because I would finish and then I would step

1:36.7

through it in my head and that would go around in my head for weeks.

1:39.2

I would remember that round.

1:40.4

But go on.

1:41.4

Forget it.

1:42.4

You're writing everything down.
