Just what puts the hum in a hummingbird's wings?

0:13.7

And why don't other birds wings hum and flight?

0:17.2

To figure it out, scientists used a specially built rig to measure air pressure, 12 high-speed

0:23.0

cameras, and over 2,000 microphones to observe hummingbirds fluttering in place at an artificial

0:29.4

flower.

0:30.4

This allowed them to make 3D visualizations of the sound of a hummingbird's wingbeats.

0:39.6

When hummingbirds flap, they create lift both on the downstroke and the upstroke, so twice

0:45.2

per wingbeat.

0:46.6

The researchers found that the hum derives from the difference in air pressure between

0:51.2

the top and bottom of the wings, which alternates 40 times a second as the hummingbird flaps.

0:57.7

The rapidly shifting air pressure produces a harmonic set of sounds from low to high, creating

1:02.7

that iconic musical hum.

1:09.8

Other birds flap with power on the downstroke only, so there's no rapidly changing pressure

1:14.9

difference when they fly, making them much quieter.

1:18.7

Their wings might woosh, but only a hummingbird's hum.
