The 9th of May, which in Russia is Victory Day, is of course a significant day in the Soviet and now Russian calendar, commemorating its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

It's famous for those huge parades in front of the Kremlin

and is perhaps a signature demonstration of Russian martial valor.

But of course this year, there may be less to celebrate.

Russia's war in Ukraine is going nowhere and there are even expectations of a huge

Ukrainian counter-offensive. So to understand the context and significance of Victory Day,

both in general in Russia and specifically in 2023, I'm delighted to be joined by

Stephen Wolf, who's professor of International Security at the University of Birmingham,

and co-founder of navigating the Vortex Podcast and newsletter.
