It's Monday, the 12th of May, three years and 78 days since the full-scale invasion began.

And today, dialing in from the Ukrainian capital, I'm joined by friend of the podcast, Francis Farrell of the Kiev Independent,

reacting to the weekend's events, and then offering a detailed analysis on the strategic picture of the front lines, where, of course, he spent considerable time.

But first, a chronological summary of the events of the weekend to bring us up to date.

Early on Saturday, on a beautiful sunny morning in Kiev, three figures stepped off a train that had travelled through the night. They were French

President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Kirstama, and new German Chancellor Friedrich

Merz. They were soon greeted by Polish Premier Donald Tusk and Ukraine's Vladomir Salensky.

The photographs alone were historic, a carefully orchestrated moment designed to cast Vladimir Putin as the chief obstacle to peace, resisting as he has now for weeks, American, Ukrainian and European calls for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire.
