Jerome Powell, chairman of the Federal Reserve, cautioned that inflation is still, quote, too high,

and said that the central bank would be prepared to raise interest rates again, quote, if appropriate.

During an eagerly awaited speech at the annual conference at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Mr. Powell pledged to, quote,

proceed carefully, based on the available data.

The central bank has raised interest rates from near 0% in March 2022 to a range of between 5.25% and 5.5% in July.

But annual inflation was at 3.2% last month, well above the bank's 2% target.

Vladimir Putin, Russia's president, said it is a, quote, complete lie that Russia was behind the private jet crash on Wednesday

that killed the Evgeny Pregozion, head of the mercenary Wagner group that mutinied in June and nine others.

He earlier described Mr. Pregozion as a, quote, talented businessman who had made serious mistakes.

American officials are reportedly assessing potential causes of the crash.

Hartfig Fisher resigned as a director of the British Museum after a member of staff was sacked over a series of thefts.

He said that the museum had failed to, quote, comprehensively respond to warnings if first received in 2021.

Objects stating back as far as the 15th century BC, including jewelry and gems, were thought to be lost.

Niger's junta ordered France's ambassador to leave the country within 48 hours.

Niger's foreign ministry accused the envoy of ignoring a request to meet with the new foreign minister,

who was appointed after a coup ousted President Mohammed Bazoum on July 26.
