A court in Russia has sentenced the jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny to a further

lengthy term behind bars in one of the country's toughest prisons.

West African states have agreed a plan for potential military intervention to restore

democracy to New Jair, a wildfire in the Iranian capital sets off explosions outside the

Evan Prison.

We begin in Russia, where the country's most prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny,

who's been imprisoned to remote penal colonies since 2021, has been found guilty of extremism charges

and had his prison sentence extended to 19 years.

It's understood here now be taken to one of Russia's highest security prisons to be subjected to a special regime,

likely to include longer periods of solitary confinement.

Friday's court proceedings were held at the prison in Melikovov, from where our Russia editor Steve Rosenberg sent his this report.
