The pursuit of the firebird. In In crime fiction, coincidence seems to be the most popular motivating force when launching the heroic investigator into his usually ludicrous and often utterly fantastic involvements.

As a man from Scotland Yard, I sometimes envy the supermen of the printed page,

both for their amazing intuition and for their irresistible attraction to the opposite sex,

especially the latter.

However, it was pure coincidence that launched me to the pursuit of the firebird.

And I had neither intuition nor the embraces of a beautiful woman to aid me.

Simply the square-toe deficiency of Detective Sergeant Mother.
