About Us

Join the Party is a collaborative storytelling and roleplaying podcast. That means four friends create a story together, chapter by chapter, that everyone from seasoned players to true beginners can enjoy. Where else can you get adventure, intrigue, magic, drama, and lots of high fives all in one place? Right here.

After each episode we sit down for the Afterparty, where we break down our game and answer your questions about how to play Dungeons & Dragons and other roleplaying games at home. We also have the Punchbowl, an interview series with people pushing D&D forward creatively, communally and socially. It’s a party, and you’re invited! Find out more at jointhepartypod.com.

Hi there, this is Eric, your DM, and welcome to the Punch Bowl, our new interview segment

0:05.3

on Join the Party.

0:07.4

Even on our off weeks, I'm still thinking about D.N.B.

0:10.1

Like playing it and coming up with all these random characters that I'm never going to be able to use.

0:14.4

But I also think about what it's like playing a nearly 50 year old game in 2017 and beyond.

0:20.0

So I figured that I'd put that to good use and talk to people who are pushing D&D forward,

0:25.5

creatively, communally, socially, just doing good work.

0:30.3

It's like I ran into them at a party and I know them from Twitter but not actually in real life and I just want to get them a drink and just talk to them about everything that they're doing.

0:38.0

So for our first segment, I called up two guys who host a show that I've been listening to since the beginning.

0:44.8

They are the dungeon cast, a podcast that dives into all things D&D one episode at a time.

0:51.4

They're casual and educational without ever being condescending even

0:56.0

when working through the most basic of topics. An empathetic education is kind of

1:01.0

radical not only in the D&D space, but in nerd culture in general.

1:06.4

It's like if the player's guide became a person you actually liked and just walked you

1:11.0

through every single thing. I had to pick their brains on what they're doing, why they're doing it, and how it's all coming together.

1:18.0

We have Will, who will be speaking first, and Brian who talks second. What's up guys? What's going on? Hey how's it going? We're doing good over here. That's great.

1:27.6

Listeners at home you can't see the really cool stuff that I'm looking at but I can see just like two D&D modules right

1:33.8

behind me I can't see which ones but oh is that Skag on the left yeah we got Skag

1:38.8

and out of the abyss that's awesome first I just want to start off with your backgrounds. What is your experience playing Dungeons and Dragons?

1:46.0

So I'm the longtime player of the two of us. I've been playing for almost eight years now. I started in fourth edition, I started as a player,

1:55.2

but it wasn't too long until I became the de facto

1:57.8

DM and pretty much everything I did.
