Summary

There was certainly no sophomore slump for Quentin Tarantino. After the success of his debut feature Reservoir Dogs, he returned two years later with one of the most influential films of the last three decades - Pulp Fiction.

The transgressive tone, hip lingo, and non-linear structure basically created an entirely new sub-genre of crime thriller. And yet - there were many detractors who felt this bold new voice in cinema was simply repackaging characters, moments, and even dialogue he'd seen in other movies.

This is an interesting one to look back on now in the wake of all the rip-offs it inspired and even just in terms of how Tarantino evolved as a filmmaker after this.

Topics include: the dire straits Travolta's career was in before this and how hard Tarantino had to fight for him, the original actor they had lined up to play Butch and how Bruce Willis' involvement changed the script, Spike Lee's ire towards Tarantino's work and whether or not some of that was justified, The Vega Brothers prequel that never materialized, your Real Life Retweets, and much much more!

Hello and welcome Hey Hey Do You Remember, a show where we reminisce about a movie or TV series we grew up with, then take off the rose tinted glasses to see how it holds up.

0:32.0

I'm Chris.

I'm Donna.

0:53.2

Yeah. And I'm Carlos. And today we're revisiting Pulp Fiction. As you might imagine, there's a lot to get into with this film.

0:57.4

And it's funny how back to back we've chosen, for very different reasons, movies that are really hard to break down in our usual format.

1:06.9

Because we're still going to go through all of this in order, but rather than set the stage here with how this came together, this is one of those titles where it makes more sense to have all of that make up the bulk of our conversation rather than doing a play-by-play of every single scene because, look, most of this is people sitting down and talking. So I'm going to hold on to all the information I looked up, which was

1:28.5

hard to gather because that Quentin Tarantino is not a guy who likes to talk very much. So

1:34.0

kind of hard to dig up. No, obviously there was a plethora of stuff out there to sift through.

1:39.7

And this is another instance where we can't possibly get to all of it. We'll always inevitably get comments that are like, I can't believe you didn't mention

1:48.0

blank.

1:49.1

And I understand that.

1:50.3

I do.

1:50.9

But it's also impossible, especially with a movie like this, which no joke has probably

1:55.4

been analyzed and written about more than most films from the past three decades.

2:00.4

So I did my best to highlight stuff I thought was really interesting or maybe not as well known.

2:05.4

So we'll jump right in in just a second.

2:07.3

But first, I have a really quick announcement.
