Today I'm taking you back to the 1950s and a dramatic gun attack at the

United States Capitol building. It was carried out by a group demanding independence

for the American Territory of Puerto Rico.

I've been listening to archive accounts of the incident.

Police hurry to America's House of Representatives in Washington following an attack by

Puerto Ricans firing more than 20 rounds from their Nuga Automatics.

In March 1954, four Puerto Ricans independence campaigners took their seats in the public gallery as the US House of

Representatives began a debate.

They were led by a former beauty queen called Lelita Lebron, who gave her team the signal to open fire.

Ambulances are rushed to the Capitol, along with doctors from a nearby naval hospital.

Alvin Bentley wounded near the heart and in the stomach is carried out while police push our cameraman aside. Five congressmen was shot in the attack, but miraculously they all survived.

Republican Ben Jensen received several severe wounds in the back.
